(United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) Reed. 9.25 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. The present majority against prohibition is 489,667 out of a total enrolment of 1,426,000.

A separate poll was taken in the Federal capital territory, which has hitherto lpeen a dry area and a three-to-one majority voted for the sale of liquor at Canberra. The New South Wales poll on Saturday was the first State referendum on the liquor question. The New South Wales electors on Saturday were given ballot papers containing tbe question: “Are you in favour of probibition with compensation,” and were required to vote by marking a cross against the printed word “yes” or “no.” All persons on the Parliamentary rolls were required to vote, failure to do so “without reasonable excuse’' involving liability to a fine of £2. A bare majority only would have been sufficient to carry the proposal. A preferential vote was also taken at Canberra on Saturday on four issues: prohibition of the possession of liquor; continuance of the present law forbidding the sale of liquor; salf. under public control and sale in licensed premises. N.S.W. NOT EDUCATED LIQUOR REFERENDUM “RESULT EXPECTED” Press Association DUNEDIN, To-day. Referring to the interim figures of the New South Wales liquor referendum, Mr. Charles Todd, president of the New Zealand Alliance, said the result was expected. Compensation to the trade was the principal reason for its defeat, and again, there had not been the same educational work in Australia as in New Zealand and America.
