DEAR HOSPITALITY
HOTEL-KEEPER FINED DRINKS AFTER HOURS At 6.30 on the evening of July 31, an Onehunga constable found Rufus Austin, Henry William Clarke, Donald J. Gray, Alfred T. Grundy, and Alfred Parker drinking in the Manukau Hotel. At the Onehunga Police Court today they pleaded guilty to charges of being on licensed premises after hours. Arthur M. McQuilkan, the licensee, admitted having supplied them with liquor. Mr. R. McVeagh, who appeared for accused, said McQuilkan was not the lessee, but acted as manager for the owners of the hotel. He was a young man, and the hoL> was well conducted. He admitted serving liquor, but had made no charge for it. The party had just finished a meal at the hotel and the licensee was within his rights had he served the liquor in the diningroom, but unfortunately this had not been done. The police gave the licensee a good report, and the magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levien, commented on the fact that accused had not come before him with a concocted story, but had made a clean breast of it. McQuilkan was fined £5 and his “guests” £2 each.
