p r T. Marshall arrived from Wellington this morning. Hr. G. S. Radley, of Radley and Co., returned from a visit to Fiji by the Tofua this morning. Major-General R. Young, G.O.C. New Zealand Forces, arrived by the Limited from Wellington this morning. Inspector L. Lucchinelli, of the Fiji Constabulary, arrived in Auckland by the Tofua this morning. Mr. and Mrs. W. Casey, of Dunedin, left by the Maheno on Friday to attetod the Eucharistic Congress in Sydney. Mr. P- Hally, conciliation commissioner, left by train last evening for Wellington. Mr. E. J. Crisp, of Gisborne, was among the passengers who arrived in Auckland by the Tofua this morning. Dr. F. J. Rayner returned by the Tofua this morning after completing the Tslands round trip. Mr. H. V. Bell, manager of the Union Steam Ship Company at Gisborne, is at present in Auckland on leave. Mr. Harvey Turner, of Turners and Growers, Ltd., returned from a business visit to Fiji by the Tofua this morning. Mr. A. r>. Campbell, the well-known big game fisherman, is expected to arrive in Auckland in October for the sword fishing. Mr. H. H. Sterling, General Manager of New Zealand Railways, travelled by the Limited from Wellington as far as Frankton. this morning. Mr. Barrie Y. Marschel, manager of British Dominion Films, Limited, arrived from Wellington this morning. He is staying at the Albert Hotel. Mr. F. M. Corkill has been appointed borough engineer at Invercargill, subject to his passing a medical examination. Mr. Corkill is at present engineer to the Egmont County Council. —P.A. Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, of the Auckland Harbour Board, who is visiting England, underwent a slight oper - tion in London. He has made a recovery, and will return to New Zealand, shortly "by way of Canada. Mr. E. P. Moir, formerly secretary to the Railway Board, who has been appointed traffic assistant to the Divisional Superintendent of Railways, Auckland, arrived by the Limited this morning to take up his position. Police Constables J. T. Smith and V. Li. Bagge, who have been on military police duty in Samoa, arrived back by the Tofua this morning. Only one member of the Auckland police force is left in the Islands now. The Rev. W. Gray Dixon, of Dunedin, an ex-Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, received the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity at the graduation ceremony of the Edinburgh University on June 28. Mr. Dixon was formerly minister of St. David’s Church, Auckland. Mr. G. Craig, comptroller of customs, has been recommended by authorities of the University of New Zealand, for the degree of Doctor of Laws. This will be the first degree of Doctor of haws to be awarded by the University since the old system of granting them by examinaton only was abolished in 1903, and the new method instituted. . r HOTEL REGISTER Grand.—Mr. J.
