By Candle Glow Devonport Orphans’ Ladies’ Night COMMUNITY SINGING The Devonport Orphans’ Club annual ladies’ night, held on Saturday evening, in the decorated Parish Hall, was a remarkable success despite a failure of the light just as the orchestra had reached the middle of its first selection. With the aid of hastily-borrowed candles and an electric torch the gloo;u was dispelled and the audience had a community sing. The president, Mr. H. S. W. King, remarked that he was sorry Devonport was being visited with the sins of Auckland, but expressed his appreciation of the patience of the guests. The club orchestra, under M 5. D’Authreau, was ready when the lights came up again and concert items were supplied by Miss Alma McGruer, Mr. Rex Yates, Mr. A. Don, Miss Edna Tye, Dr. de Clive Lowe, Master Taberner, Mr. Herb. Richards, Mr. Stan Pritchard, and Norman Tate. Messrs. Moodie, Colin Muston and Whittaker played accompaniments. Official visitors were: Bro. Howden, Auckland Orphans’ Club; President Lethbridge and Secretary Messenger, of the Northcote and Birkenhead Club; President W. K. Francis, from Papakura; President W. Massey and Secretary Geo. SURPRISE PARTY Mrs. J. W. Osborne took a surprise party of friends to the home of Miss Helen Montague, in St. George’s Bay Road, on Saturday evening, when cne room was cleared and the guests enjoyed an evening of dancing. The lounge and hallway of the house were fragrant with spring flowers, and spreading clumps of pussywillow made a graceful addition to the decorations. Supper was served upstairs, and the tables were gay with daffodils and primroses. Miss Montague received her guests wearing a naples blue beaded georgette frock and an embroidered oyster grey scarf. Her mother, Mrs. J. F. Montague, was wearing a steel beaded violet georgette gown and a figured chenille shawl fringed with red. Mrs. Osborne wore a tiered frock of blush pink georgette, with a bouffant bow of taffeta at the waist. Mrs. C. Montague wore a silver tissue frock with rosebud trimming. CLICK CLACK CABARET The Click Clack Cabaret was thronged with dancers on Saturday evening, and the lounge and blue room was gaily decorated with palms, ferns and iceland poppies. - Mr. Clyde Howley and his famous Internationals supplied the brightest music, and were repeatedly encored. WELL-KNOWN VISITOR ENTERTAINED Miss McCorqundale, a well-known member of the W.C.T.tJ. in Sydney, who is at present touring New Zealand, was entertained on Saturday afternoon by the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. The lounge of the Y.M.C.A. was artistically decorated with bowls of narcissi and wattle. The* guest of honour was introduced by Mrs. Duxfield, president of the division. Miss McCorqundale then gave a most interesting talk on women’s organisations in the different lands she . had visited in a world’s tour recently. In England the women, she said, made greater use of their opportunities than do the colonials, probably because they had had to struggle harder to get them. She particularly referred to the very fine work being done by Lady Astor, who is a most enthusiastic supporter of the cause for women and children.
ST. GEORGE’S CLUB DANCE On Thursday evening the dance arranged by the committee of the St. George’s Young People's Club was very gay. TEA AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE PLUNKET DELEGATES ATTEND The delegates who attended the Plunket Conference, held in Wellington last week, werp the guests of h?r Excellency the Lady Alice Fergusson at afternoon tea at Government House on Thursday, after the adjournment of the conference. The guests were received by her Excellency in the ballroom, which was charmingly decorated with flowers. Altogether about 250 delegates and friends were present.
