Four People Escape from Burning House

CLIMB OVER PORCH

DELAY IN GIVING ALARM

Mr. and Mrs. S. Bradley, of Mount Roskill, with their two children had a narrow escape when their house in Haig Avenue was partially destroyed by fire about 1.40 this morning. They were forced to climb out in their night attire over the roof of an enclosed porch, all other ways of escape being blocked by the flames. Mr. Bradley then had to walk a considerable distance to the nearest telephone-box to send for the Mount Roskill Fire Brigade. Unfortunately, he found that he had no penny with which to operate the machine and had to wait some time until a passer-by came along. In the meantime the house, which was a five-roomed one, was badly damaged. Three rooms were completely destroyed with all their contents and the rest of the house was badly damaged. The fire brigade turned out smartly when the alarm was received and managed to save a little, but by far the greater part of the house and furniture was either destroyed or damaged. The house is owned by Mrs. J. Cook, of Dominion Road. It was insured in the South British Office for £7OO. The furniture was insured in the Prudential Office for £250.
