KAITAIA DRAINAGE NEW DREDGE ARRIVES A new dragline dredge arrived from on Saturday, to assist in expediting the swamp drainage scheme. The crews of the dredges are working night and day on the Whangatane spillway. The new dredge will take a little time in erection, but when working will considerably shorten the work. It is considered the Government scheme will eliminate danger of flood within the drainage area. TAURANGA MUNICIPAL BAND The new instruments for the Tauranga Municipal Band came to hand on riday. At a practice the members expressed their satisfaction with the instruments. The band now numbers 22 and it is its intention to give a number of open-anr concerts in Herries Park during the summer months.

KAIKOHE AFFAIRS The annual meeting of the congrega. I tion of the Bay of Islands ITelbytWia* Church was held at Kaikohe on Thursj day evening. The Rev. H. J. Rybur* presided and presented the session re. port. The balance sheet showed th« income from all sources to be £340, the expenditure as £369. The debtor the church was reduced by £SO. The retiring committee, Messrs, o Perry and C. W. Lock (members of tki session). J. K. McKenzie. J. W. Aulay, F. E Lewis. F. G. Dibble. G. E, Killen and G. E. S. Brodie, was reelected with the addition of Thomas, the deaconess. The secretary tendered his resign, tion, owing to pressure of business, and consented to act pending the ap. pointment of a successor. It was decided to hold a bazaar during the summer for church debt reduction purposes. The meeting placed on record itj deep appreciation of Miss Moore, who has left the district, for her devoted work in the interests of the Sundayschool and children. The following were elected as the Kaikohe Church Committee:—Mesdames W. B. Barry, A. W. Edwards, sen., A. J. Edwards, H. F. Guy, tv. Shaw, C. Willett, A. J. Wright, Mis® Black and Miss D. Routley. and Messrs. N. Alcock, G. E. S. Brodie. T. Guerin, H. R. McLean, J. Routley, and W. Shaw. Mr Lowe, the Government tobacco expert, addressed a meeting of prospective tobacco growers in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Kaikohe, on Wednesday evening. Mr. T. Guerin presided. Mr. Lowe explained the approved methods of preparing the soil, the care of the crop, and the curing of the leaf. He suggested that for the first year only small areas should be put under culivation, which could be increased a* experience was gained. It was essential to form an association, as the department only worked through combinations of growers, if time would not permit association this season, a working arrangement could possibly be arranged with the* Hokianga Association in the way of getting plants and advice. He said he noticed several localities around Kaikohe specially suitable for tobacco culture.
