FATAL STEP IN DARKNESS
YOUNG BANK-TELLER FALLS INTO RIVER TRAGIC FOOTBALL PARTY (From Our Own Correspondent.) WHAKATANE, To-day To be drowned while returning from a football match was the fate of a young bank-teller, Mr. .Raymond Alexander McPhee, on Saturday. Mr. Raymond Alexander McPhee, 21, a teller in the local branch of the Bank of Australasia was drowned in the Waimana River on Saturday evening-, when returning .by motor-car from a football match at Opotiki. Mr. L. Waugh, of Whakatane, was driving the car,another occupant being Mr. Ronald Miller, of Hamilton. On arriving at the gorge the party goi out of the car and Mr. Waugh adjusted the lights. When returning to the car Mr. McPhee slipped and fell over the bank into the river a distance of 25 feet. Unavailing search was made for him. The body was recovered yesterday morning. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned.
