LYRIC
“GOOD TIME CHARLEY” Changing scenes and tense drama mark the picture, “The Opening Night,” to be shown at the Lyric Theatre this evening. A large variety of action, from tense love scenes to soul stirring thrills, feature the production. The audience is first introduced to the mechanics of the theatre during the rehearsal of a new production about to open on Broadway. It is then taken to the home of the producer and instructed in the use of a miniature stage for experimenting with sets and lighting effects. A few domestic sequences follow in which characterisations are built up by Claire Windsor, John Bowers, E. Alyn Warren and Bobby Mack, and then the background shifts to an ocean liner. Here the real thrills •egin. The boat is rammed by a derelict and sinks. There is the tense rescue work and finally the point of safety where the lifeboat lands in a quaint Newfoundland fishing village. A story of stageland, and the joysand sorrpws of the people behind the footlights, is the second attraction, entitled “Good Time Charley.” Warner Oland, Helene Costello and Clyde Cook are the stars.
EMPIRE SHOWS “LOVE HUNGRY” “Love Hungry,” a comedy drama starring Lois Moran, will be shown at the Empire Theatre this evening. It is a modern story of a New York girl. In this production Miss Moran, as Joan Robinson, is a chorus girl who has her own ideas about love and the attendant responsibilities. When she meets Tom Harvey, played by Lawrence Gray, Joan is first amused and then somewhat nettled when she finds him, in his capacity as a writer, hiding out advice through his column in a newspaper to young men and women to get married and have no fear of the future. This, according to Joan, Is pretty tame advice to give would-be bridegrooms verging on bankruptcy. “Simple Sis,” another comedy starring Louise Fazenda and Clyde Cook, will also be shown.
