LOSS OF HERALD

INQUIRY ON MONDAY A nautical inquiry will be opened at the Magistrate’s Court on Monday concerning the stranding of the scow Herald at Flat Rock on July 14. The accident occurred at three o’clock in the morning, when the Herald was en route from Wha.ngarei to Coromandel. The four members of the crew landed on the rock, and wore rescued 12 hours later by the Union Company’s steamer Tofua, , which brought them to Auckland. Shortly after the Herald stranded she slipped off the reef and drifted away toward the Great Barrier. It is surmised she afterwards foundered, because she could not be located next day by the tug Simplon, which had been sent from Auckland to tow her to port.
