PREVENT LEAF CURL
j It might be well to mention that | early August is the time to spray ! trees subject to the pernicious “leai- | curl” disease, so prevalent in many j gardens. Few will have difficulty in recognising this disease, for the yel-lowish-red, puckered and fieshy leaves are most noticeable, and frequently the affected trees are defoliated quite early in the summer. The only real cure is to spray; providing it is done thoroughly with the right materials and at the right time, it is sure in effect. The whole secret is to spray immediately before the buds begin to swell. A useful recipe for a home-made spray is;— Copper sulphate, 9% oz. Sodium carbonate, 11 oz. Water, 3 gallons. If a small quantity of milk be added to this, the wash will be more effective. Picking off affected leaves during the summer is not a cure. Early August is also the time to dust over gooseberry bushes with a mixture of equal parts of soot and slaked builder’s lime, to prevent birds from picking off the buds.
