WORKING ON SUNDAY
CHINESE PAY PENALTY Pleading guilty at the Magist Court this morning to working at their trades on Sunday, nine Chinese were each fined £ 1 and costs. Wong Kee and All Nigh appeared in person. Ah Du, Ah Lon. Ah Chee, Wong Chong. Ah Fong, Ah Hing and Quong Sing Informing tho Court through Sub-Inspector McCarthy they were too busy to attend, but admitted the offences. Constable McKenzie said that the Chinese, who lived at Mount Roskill. were working in their gardens, which were near the Hillsborough Cemetery. When questioned by the constable, the men had said that they had to work on Sunday* as they could not get up early enough on Monday to get their vegetables away to the markets in time. Wong Kee said that all he did was to cut a little cabbage. “They do not seem to understand." said Sub-Inspector McCarthy. “They were still working last Sunday.” Mr. McKean: They will find that sort of work rather expensive.
