KING COUNTRY JOTTINGS
To augment the funds of the Kakahi Church, Anglican women organised a successful euchre tournament. Mrs. Mills won the first prize, Mr. Tucker the men's and the consolations went to Miss Baker and Mr. Geary. Mrs. Ashworth presented a cake as the prize fo.r a guessing competition, which was won by Mr. W. Allen. The function was the third of a series which the ladies are holding for the same purpose. * * * A number of young people raided the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. McKay, at Ohura, recently, with a surprise party. M.rs. Abbott and Mr. C. Nicholls won a progressive “500” tournament. The Loyal Hearts of Oak Lodge of Oddfellow's, Taumarunui, held a largely attended meeting at the beginning of the week, visitors present including Bro. Gubb, Grand Master of the 'Auckland district, as well as representatives of adjacent lodges. An interesting address was given by Bro.
Gubb, and items vfere rendered by Bros. Sherson, Mclsaac, Franks, Bastion, Fisher, O’Donnell, Pepperill, Taylor, Pittams, Butt and Hackshaw. , Mrs. Christmas was the highest scorer at an enjoyable bridge party given at her residence, Taumarunui, by Mrs. O’Brien. The consolation prize went to Mrs. Beeche. Mrs. Christmas was also the winner at a delightful party given at her home by Mrs. D. Simmons. Mrs. Clegg, senr., was nearest to the hidden number. * * * Mrs. O. Old, one of the oldest and most popular residents of the Tokirima district, is spending a holiday visit to Australia and Honolulu, and expects to be away for several months. Mr. and Mrs. Longley were the organisers of a very successful concert and dance held at Matiere, the hall being packed for the event. The major portion of the concert programme was given by the children, an operetta, “The Rose of Joy,” being exceedingly well done. In addition Mrs. Longley, Miss P. MacAvady and Messrs. Rhynd, Taylor and Passmore gave items. The
I “Bow Tie Four” supplied excellent I dance music, and Mr. Longley gave ; extras. * * * A delightful conversazione, organ- | ised in the interests of the TaumaruL nui Presbyterian Church, was held in ' M.rs. Murray’s tea-rooms, when de- ! lightful musical items were given by Mrs. C. L. Jones, Miss Marjorie Davis and Miss Hughes.' Messrs. Hughes and Stevenson sang, and the Young People’s Bible Class acted some cleverly worked out charades. Mrs. Thomas, Miss Carrington and Miss Stevenson won competitions. At a meeting of the executive of the Plunket Society final arrangements were made for holding the annual ball on September 8. The meeting was held at the home of Mrs. F. J. Karam, and at its conclusion Mesdames Shearman and Crocker provided afternoon tea.
With Miss Rona Rutherford as referee, an excellent game of basketball was witnessed by a large number of spectators at Kaitieke, when the Raurimu and Kaitieke Clubs met, the game being a draw with one goal each. The game was hard and willing all through, and disclosed the great improvement the various players are making.
Artistically arranged greenery, softly-shaded lights, with a charming trellis at one end of the hall, made an enchanting scene for the numerous guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Tomlinson, of Taumarunui, at the coming-of-age party of their eldest daughter, Marie. Dancing was indulged in to music supplied by Mr. C. Williams, to which Mr. Hughes and Miss M. O’Brien added much appreciated extras. Mu El. Seddon Hills was M.C., and during the supper interval proposed Miss Tomlinson’s health. Mr. W. Melrose gave the health of the host and hostess, Mr. Tomlinson responding. Miss M. Harrison has been elected secretary of the Kaitieke Ladies’ Sports Club, vice Mrs. B. R. Gibbons, resigned. The club is making arrangements for the provision of a double tennis court for the coming season, preliminary work being left in the hands of Mr. Inverarity. The second euchre tournament held under the auspices of the Raurimu Hall Committee concluded with a wellcontested evening, the winners being Mrs. W. Hutson and Mr. Ingram. Miss F. Clarke and Mr. E. Lacon won the points prizes for the season. The committee intends commencing another tournament shortly. * * * The delightful music supplied by the Maori String Orchestra from the houseboat, yVanganui River, was one of the great attractions that drew a large attendance to the benefit dance held at Raurimu in the interests of Mr. Climo, a footballer whose leg was fractured during a recent match. In addition to the music for dancing, members of the orchestra treated the company to a number of‘vocal items. Mr. F. Matson was M.C. Use the end of a candle instead of a cork for your glue-tin and it will not stick. To dissipate any unpleasant odour after eating onions, clean the teetl well, then drink a glass of milk. Oil of cloves dabbed on the forehead aijd temples will relieve a headache.
