Manslaughter Charge

MAORI KILLED BY LORRY INTOXICATION ALLEGED Press Association. ' HAMILTON, To-day. John Walker, a lorry-driver, of Waihou, is standing his trial in the Supreme Court on a charge of causing the death of a Maori woman, Hiria Wherawhera. It is alleged that Walker was intoxicated when driving a party of Maoris on his lorry, and ran over a bank. Hiria was pinned beneath the vehicle and killed. Various witnesses gave evidence that Walker was slightly intoxicated. Dr. Lawrence, of Te Aroha, said that an hour and a-half after the accident Walker answered all the tests for sobriety successfully. He had obviously been drinking but witness would not care to say whether he was fit to drive a vehicle or not.
