MT. ALBERT’S PROGRESS
BUILDING ACTIVITY BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS Twenty-six building permits, to the value of £9,262, were issued in the Mount Albert borough during the three weeks ended August 24. Mr. L. Dodds, building inspector, reported these figures to the council last evening. Seven dwellings, valued at £5,085, and three brick shops, valued at £3,300, were the main items. The council voted £2 2s to the Labour Day Celebration Committee for the Labour Day sports prr<c Turd, and the proposed contribution to the Auckland Institute and Museum was referred to joint committees, with power to act. Mr. S. R. Kingdon, health inspector, reported 10 cases of diphtheria, five of scarlet fever, and one of tuberculosis, in a three weeks’ period. Captain F. C. Marter stated that the fire brigade had received several telephoned false alarms recently. The police had been informed. For reconstruction work in Burnley Terrace, 10 tenders were received, the lowest, £2,746, that of McCarten Bros., being accepted on the motion of Cr. Buckley, subject to the guarantors being satisfactory. The two next lowest are to be retained. The engineer’s estimate was £3,000, and the allocation £3,377. Mr. L. E. Rhodes, Mayor, announced that an offer of several hundred grown rhododendrons had been made by Mr. A. Wright, nurseryman, of Avondale. Mr. Rhodes said that planting work would be begun in George Street first.
