NATIVE TREES WANTED
WAR MEMORIAL MUSEUM PLANTING The scheme in view to plant the area around the Auckland War Memorial Museum with trees foreign to New Zealand is meeting opposition from Te Akarana Maori Association. The association has sent a letter to the City Council Parks Committee making - a plea for the planting of native flora. Countering the assertion that native tree growth would be difficult owing to the exposed position of the area, the association say* that the site was originally covered with a heavy growth of bush. As the museum building has been constructed on Grecian lines, the parks committee intends to plant trees to tone with the appearance. Foreign trees further have the advantage of quicker growth. The Maori Association, however, stresses that the patriotic viewpoint should not be overlooked.
