TUDOR, REMUERA
TWO BIG PICTURES A daring 1 exposure of some aspects of New York life, entitled “The Escape,” will be shown at the Tudor Theatre, Remuera, this evening, with Virginia Valli in the leading role. Centring about the life of a girl who is determined to escape from the sordid surroundings of “The Kettle” and New Y'ork night-club life, the screen version is packed with human interest from the opening shot, in Gotham’s tenements, to the dazzling glitter of the Blue Moon Night Club, where underworld denizens hold undisputed sway. It is one of the most graphic photoplays seen here in many months. Nancy Drexel, a newcomer who has been played under contract by Fox Films, gives a sympathetic characterisation as Jennie Joyce, younger sister of Miss Valli. “Circus Rookies,” an uproarious comedy starring Karl Dane and George K. Arthur will also be shown.
“ABIE’S IRISH ROSE
A SUCCESSFUL PICTURE “Abie’s Irish Rose” is perhaps the best-known of all dramatic efforts for many years. The play ran for five years in New York, and it has been staged in every principal city in the world. Only a short while ago it was brought to the New Zealand stage and met with wonderful success. The film version was made by Paramount Pictures with the co-operation of Anne Nichols, the author. The picture has already been released in America and promises to repeat the huge success it enjoyed as a stage play. It will shortly be seen by audiences throughout New Zealand. “SILK LEGS” AT EMPIRE “Silk Legs,” a romantic comedy starring Madge Bellamy, will be shown at the Empire Theatre this evening. Miss Bellamy is cast as a winsome hosiery traveller, who is ardently admired by Phil Parker, a rival salesman. Phil’s breezy manner has made an impression on Ruth but, ladylike, she cannot accept his advances without being properly introduced. Phil’s methods of overcoming this obstacle provided much of the merriment in this hilarous comedy-drama. In addition to Miss Bellamy, the cast includes James Hall, Joseph Cawthorn, Maude Fulton and Margaret Seddon. “The Blood Ship,” a drama of the sea, is the second feature. Hobart Bosworth, Jacqueline Logan and Richard Arlen will be seen in the cast.
