GUARD PREVENTS SMASH
RAILWAY MISHAP WAGON DERAILED AT ELLERSLIE The prompt action of Guard F. Russell prevented a serious smash occurring yesterday at Ellerslie, when a rank of trucks broke away and ran down the incline into the Ellerslie Railway Station. A train of 21 loaded ballast wagons was proceeding toward Auckland up the Remuera incline when a coupling broke. Twelve of the wagons suddenly started to run back. Mr. Russell applied the brake in his van and then, jumping from one wagon to the other, applied the brakes on five more. He was unable to stop the rank of trucks, however, which ran back and struck the engine of a goods train at the Ellerslie Station. This engine was fortunately going backwards at the time and eased the force of the crash. One wagon was thrown off the line and a few of the others were slightly damaged. Some damage was also done to the front of the engine which was struck by the runaway wagons. Suburban traffic was held up for threequarters of an hour, until the line was cleared. No one was injured, though the en-gine-driver on the goods train, Mr. E. Marks, and the fireman, Mr. TV". Grace, received a shock.
