CAMBRIDGE AFFAIRS RATEPAYERS FORM ASSOCIATION A well-attended meeting of ratepayers was held at Hautapu last evening, and a resolution was passed strongly opposing any deviation from the original scheme for tar-sealing the CambridgeHamilton main road without the ratepayers being consulted. The meeting was the outcome of criticism of the Waikato County Council’s attitude with regard to the loan recently carried for this main highway. Mr. G. Watt presided at the meeting and Mr. W. Newell, chairman of the Waikato County Council, was also present. His explanations regarding certain important county matters were accepted by the meeting as satisfactory and it was decided to form a Cambridge Ratepayers’ Association. Mr. G. Watt was elected chairman and Mr. W. Moore secretary. TE AWAMUTU NEWS The Rev. W. Butterworth presided at the annual meeting of members of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Te Awamutu, on Wednesday. There was a large attendance. The election of managers resulted: Messrs. C. F. Battson, S. A. Roberts, R. Ross, S. Clark, R. G. Weatherell, Flay, R. McCallum and Gittos. * * • At the annual meeting of the To Awamutu Croquet Club the following officers were elected: Patron, Mrs. K. C. Rickit; president, Mrs. W. Jeffey; vicepresidents, Mesdames J. P. O’Sullivan. D. McArthur and F. B. Bowden; treasurer, Mrs. H. U. Collins; secretary; Mrs. S. Dawds; general committee, Mesdames Noonan and Davis; match committee, Downes, Battson, Layne, Chittenden, Mesdames Downes, Layne and Bowden. A vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring president, Mrs. Downes, and alao to the retiring secretary, Mrs. Battson. The secretary’s report and balancesheet were read, showing the club to be in a very sound position. After paying all expenses, there was a credit balance of £l3 12s lid. The following donated trophies during the season: Mr. S. Clark and Mesdames K. C. Rickit, H. J. Collins, S. Dowds, J. Houston, TV. H. Davis and C. F. Battson. KAW ATI RI TO LAY UP. The Union Company’s steamer Kawatiri, which hiis been undergoing overhaul and survey at Western Wharf, will move to an anchorage in Hobson Bay to-morrow morning. Her future movements are indefinite. The letter portion will arrive here on Tuesday, August 28. WAITOMO DOCKS. —The Union Company’s steamer Waitomo docked at Calliope this morning to have her broken tail-shaft repaired. The vessel drifted helpless for three days in the Tasman, ard was towed to Auckland by the Kaitoke. COPENHAGEN’S BERTH. OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL DECISIONS At last evening’s meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council, the Mayor. Mr R. B. Todd, was appointed the delegate to attend a conference to be held in Wellington next week, to ask the Minister of Public Works to mat retrospective payments on the cos' of permanent roads. The Trades Hall Labour Day celebration Committee is to he advised that the council has no funds with which to make a donation towards the funds of the Labour Day celebrations. The action of the Mayor in promising the council's support towards the Summer Time (Local Empowering Bill) was endorsed. The health inspector was instructed to report on a complaint front the ITamaki Progressive League, regarding the non-compliance of Chinese resb derfts in making proper sanitarv arrangements. On the recommendation of the Works Committee, the north-west side of Hall Avenue was allotted as a taxi stand to accommodate six cars, and it was decided that a by-law be framed fixing the time limit of 30 minutes for the parking of motor-cars in Great South Road. 1 The matter of providing a camping ground for motorists, was referred to the Parks Committee. The annual balance-sheet of the Otahuhu Volunteer Fire Brigade showed a total income of £167 4s lid, and expenditure for the year totalled £I4S 3s 2d, leaving a credit balance of £IS Is 9d. It was decided that the annual cubsidy of £3O be paid to the brigade. PAPAKURA ORPHANS’ CLUB The Papakura Orphans* Club* met last evening. when past-president Bro. W. C. Wood presided. There was again a large attendance to welcome the official guests of the evening, president Bro. J. Lethbridge, and executive, avd secretary Bro. Lavson, vice-president; Bro. Harris, and treasurer Bro. Wernham, of the Birkenhead and Northcote Orphans* Club. A very warm welcome was extended to the visitors by the chairman.
