CARPENTER'S RUSE
RIFLED SHOP TILL “SUDDEN TEMPTATION” The defence put up by Percy Arthur Bailey, a carpenter, aged 48, who pleaded not guilty at the Police Court this morning to a charge of theft, failed to satisfy the Magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M. Elizabeth Gwilliam, a second-hand dealer stated that the prisoner had coire into her shop on August 14 and offered some household utensils for sale. She had offered 2s 6d for them and he had accepted. Not having any change she had left the shop for a few minutes, leaving £2 10s in the till. When she returned she gave the man his 2s 6d and he left the shop. Immediately after she discovered the £ 210 s was gone. She ran out into the road but the man was not in sight. Mr. A. Hall Skelton, for Bailey, said that there was no proof that Bailey had taken the money and strenuously denied his client’s guilt. “I am convinced the man yielded to sudden temptation,*' said the Magistrate. Bailey was ordered to make restitution and come up for sentence if called upon.
