HAMILTON WANTS HIGH SCHOOL HOSTEL
APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT UNJUST TREATMENT CLAIMED (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Thursday. When two members of the Board of Governors of the Hamilton High School waited on the Minister of Education recently and asked for a grant of £20,000 for a boy’s hostel, the Minister told them that 5 per cent, of the grant would have to be borne by the board. At a meeting of the board to-day members considered tnis to be an injustice in view of the fact that between 1914 and 1926 the department has made free grants totalling £257,000 for hostels. In all that time the board had never pressed its claims for a hostel, and it now intended to have one to be erected, on the 10 acres given by the townspeople for the purpose. After a long discussion it was unanimously decided to request the Government to proceed immediately with the erection of a boys’ hostel on this site. The matter of waiting again on the Minister and pointing out the injustice of the 5 per cent, stipulation was referred to the chairman, Mr. C. L. Mac Diarmid, and the secretary, Mr. R. English. Members of the board decided to endeavour to meet the Hon. J. A. Young, who will be in Hamilton for the annual reunion of the Waikato Early Settlers’ Association to-morrow. Mr. Young has been one of the board’s , best champions throughout, and with his support the governors sincerely hope that Cabinet will make a free grant, considering the urgent needs of the school.
