Soccer Championship
AN INTERESTING STAGE
Some Critical Games To-Morrow
AFTER some lively knockout cup-ties the closing round oi' tlic senior - championship starts at Blandford Park tomorrow, when two matches with an important bearing on the championship will be staged. With Shore’s defeat ot Ponsonby and Trams sequence of wins, the competition is again very open, and each team will be right after the points. A loss to the ‘Tonies” and “Trammies” will mean only a point difference between the three leading clubs, and some exciting tussles should be witnessed.
The big: game will be the clash between Trams and Shore, which will provide a lirst-class contest between two clever elevens. The Corporation Club has the benefit of age and long experience at the code, but the youthful Shore side has all the elan and audacity of the younger generation, and the contrast in styles always provides a fascinating game. With Batty, Simpson, Christie, Tinkler, and Co. in the back division, the Trams’ defence is of a very solid nature, but Shore is but little inferior with Gerrard, Jones, Gilmour, Renshaw, and Co. in good form. The Trams’ van has improved a lot since the early rounds of the series, and has now a strong and penetrative thrust. One weakness • halves this season has been the tendency to give the opposing wing men too much .freedom, and both Simm and Spong are very dangerous if given an unopposed run of the line, while Spencer is an artist in exploiting opportunist tactics in the advanced central position. Shore expects to strengthen its attack with the return of Woolley, but will be without Don Webb, who proved a useful scorer in the defeat of Ponies. A win to the Shore Colts will bring them within a point of Trams, and make the championship a very open race. The preliminary game between Ponsonby and Onehunga is also full of interest with its important bearing on the championship. The Manukau side has suffered severely through defections caused by the split in the code, but has now disbanded its junior team, thereby releasing a number of promising juniors for promotion. The Onehunga seconds were one of the strongest junior elevens, and the new blood should provide a combination which "will make the Ponies gallop all the way to retain the top rung of i!uladder. The defeat of Ponsonby at Devonport in the last round proved that its attack is not invulnerable against a front line of lively young raiders, while the Onehunga defence is very staunch and solid. At Northeote the home team meets Belmont to play for the bottom rung, and Y.M.C.A. enjoys a 'well-earned bye. LIST OF TEAMS Senior Grade * North Shore.—Staples, Colebourne.
