Bantam’s Fine Showing

AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Good Fights in First Rounds

GOOD boxing was witnessed by a good crowd at the Auckland Town Hall last evening when the preliminary bouts of the 1928 New Zealand Amateur Championships were staged.

No boxer of extraordinary ability was seen in action, though all the competitors showed that they had more than an elementary knowledge of the game. Contestants in only four divisions were seen, and when the semi-finals are staged this eveningcompetitors in the other classes will appear. The finals will be held tomorrow evening. The best boxer last evening was Cyril Hurne, the Wellington bantamweight champion, who fought a fine fight against -Hawes, of Westport. The Wellingtonian showed himself to be a boxer of class with a solid punch. He decisively defeated Hawes, who was considered to have a good chance of winning the division. Hurne should annex the honour. Wright, of Christchurch, and Roderick, of Gisborne, put up the best fight of the night. The latter kept Wright busy evading punches in the first round, but in the second the Canterbury champion took a turn in the offensive with a resultant great fight. Little separated the pair at the finish, and the decision went to Roderick. The referees were Messrs. R. Meale, Auckland, and J. Kalmar tin, Dunedin, and the judges were Messrs. G. Bush, Auckland, A. Beban, Greymoutli, J. E. Staples, Wellington, and S. A. Lindsay, Invercargill. The announcer was Mr. W. E. Dervan. The results of the bouts are as follow: BANTAM-WEIGHT C. Davis (Auckland), 7st. 1311 b first round was even, but Davis took the fight to his opponent in the second, which he won comfortably. He also won the last easily, the referee stopping the bout. L. MANLY’S MARATHON DOG RUNNER AS TRAM CHASER Regular tram travellers in Sydney between Manly and Deewhy are ready to back a white bull terrier against any dog his weight in the State, as a marathon runner. The dog, known as Snowball, takes a delight in racing alongside the trams from Manly to Deewhy, and return. During the five-mile run, he never tires, and always finishes the run between each stop, a few seconds behind the trams. One tram driver swears that Snowball raced his tram out and back on three occasions. r Itv-v—l?
