INEFFICIENT BRAKES

TRUCK-DRIVER FINED (From Our Own Correspondent ) PUKEKOHE, Wednesday. Driving a motor-lorry with inefficient brakes cost a young man £5 12s 3d at the Pukekohe Court to-day. Arthur Alfred Welch, of Whatawhata, was charged with operating a motor vehicle not furnished with efficient brakes and driving in a dangerous manner. It was said that he descended a hill driving a truck laden with metal at from 35 to 40 miles an hour, and upon meeting a mob of cattle he knocked three off their feet before coming to a standstill. Welch in a statement to the police admitted that the brakes on the lorry were not operating as they should. He had brought the matter to the notice of the owner, who advised that repairs would be effected. The magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levien, entered a conviction with 10s costs on the first charge, and a fine of £ 3 with £2 Os 3d costs on the second charge.
