STATE MILL TO CLOSE
FRANKTON HOUSE FACTORY STAFF GOES TO MAMAKU (From Our Oxen Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. Definite advice was received from the manager of the Government sawmill and housing factory at Frankton to-day that both concerns will close down before the end of next month and will recommence operations at Mamaku. He stated clearly that there will be no unemployment as a result of the winding-up. There are about DO employees involved and those who will not be transferred to Mamaku will be absorbed by other Government department?. The housing programme is now finished and tliere are about 50 workers’ houses to leave the factory before it is dismantled. The sawmill can be of no further use at Frankton, as twothirds of the output was used for houses. The factory at Frankton is the only Government one in the North Island, with the exception of a small concern near Dargaville. It is understood that the Mamaku will be used to prepare timber for use in all Government departments.
