A MYSTERIOUS DISEASE
DAIRY HERDS AFFECTED (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. That a mysterious fatal disease is making its appearance among the dairy herds of the Auckland Province was an assertion made in the House of Representatives to-day by Mr. W. Jones, member for Marsden. The malady, stated Mr. Jones, revealed itself in the cows about 10 to 12 days after calving, and its symptoms were akin to milk fever, with the addition of severe attacks of shivers. He asked the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. O. J. Hawken, what steps were being taken to cope with it. The Minister stated that the officers of the department were making full investigations. The disease was known in New Zealand prior to the war, and, although fatal in the great majority of cases, experience has shown that it is not contagious. An officer of the department stationed in the Waikato has been making investigations for some time. It is not considered that it is more prevalent this year than most, others.
