THE “SIN” PARADE

NO TRAFFIC BLOCK COMMISSIONER’S ASSURANCE -Assurances were given the Mayor. Mr. G. Baildon, by the Salvation Army yesterday, that the “Sin” parade in Auckland would not injure anyone's susceptibilities, and there would be no blocking of traffic. Commissioner Hay, of the Salvation Army waited on the Mayor yesterday, and the Mayor afterwards stated that he had been assured that the procession would not interfere with the* late night traffic in Queen Street, as it v/as proposed to have only about 100 persons in the parade, and it was estimated the march along Queen Street to the new Congress Hall would not occupy more than about 20 minutes Commissioner Hay reminded the Mayor that at the Eucharist Congresses of the Roman Catholic Church it was customary to have a procession in which the Host was carried through the streets, and no exception had been taken to that practice on the score of street congestion. Those heading the Salvation Army procession would wear black robes, while those following would be. robed in red and white respectively, the commissioner said. On his attention being drawn to public criticism of the proposal, Commissioner Hay assured the. Mayor he had received many communications commending the procession. There was no suggestion that Auckland was more sinful than other centres.
