TROTTING

(By “ABAYDOS.") NOTES AND COMMENTS AFFAIRS AT OTAHUHU trainers getting active Up to the recent heavy rains the tracks at Otahuhu have been in splendid order, enticing trainers in that locality to make a start with their charges in preparation for the spring fixtures which are pending in October and November. At present only easy work is being indulged in, but before long things will be assuming a more lively appearance. Bert Adams Starts Toil A. E. (Bert) Adams has put in an appearance at the tracks, his string comprising The Abbey, Abrudbanya, Amaris and a novice trotter claiming St. Kevin as his paternal parent. The horses all bear marks of having received careful attention during the winter season, and will be in good shape to tackle the serious business when the time arrives. Adams is making extensive improvements to his new property, and his presence is welcomed among the trotting fraternity in the suburbs. Amaris on the Track Again Amaris, who has been an absentee from the active brigade since causing the big mix-up in the St. Heliers Handicap at Alexandra Park on the opening day of the Auckland Christmas carnival, has come to no hurt during his lengthy holiday. The operation he was subjected to in the autumn proved successful, and there is every reason to believe the son of Logan Pointer will eventually strike his best form again this season. When right. Amaris is a useful pacer. I j ( • ( J ] t 1 < l 1 1 \ ‘

Enough to Keep Him Busy Mauna, Black Ballin, Cute Lad, Lady Joan, and a three-year-old filly by Worthy Bond from that speedy mare Logan Queen, are keeping Sid. Groat busy, and his charges as usual do the Mangere mentor every credit. Dame Fortune has not smiled kindly on Sid during the last season or two, and a change of her tactics would be appreciated by him and his many friends. Lady Joan showed signs of returning to form toward the close of the year, and should she be persevered with, many yet secure a stake before .joining the matrons’ paddock. Bred on Great Lines The Worthy Bond—Logan Queen filly is a real lady not only in appearance but also in manners, and if *he fails to turn out trumps then the game cannot be reckoned fair. She has not been unduly hurried in ’her education, but is already showing signs of possessing some of the speed of her parents. Logan Queen was a great miler, having a 2.13 record, and, having Ax worthy blood in her make-up, it will not be surprising if she turns out a real speed merchant. The Man o* War—Cazonetta colt belonging to B. P. Edwards is coming along like a house on fire, and he is one that promises to be ready when the flags are unfurled at some of the country fixtures this season. He is built on splendid lines, and there is no disputing the fact that he has speed. Man At Arms, as he is called, is a smart beginner, and when under way paces in a most attractive fashion. Sam Roe’s String Sam Roe is educating a four-year-old maiden trotter by Gold Bell from ..the well-known square-gaited mare, Fairburn, and it is showing promise of making a fair performer, although it may require time. The same trainer is also attending to Lord Nepean, while owner F. Young is absent in Australia. A new owner having been found for Pitaroa, the aged Petereta pacer has been placed under Sam’s care, and It is quite on the cards that his string will shortly bo further augmented. A PENROSE BREEDER BRADY, the Penrose lightharness enthusiast, is determined to breed on the best lines and his mares Papatina and Connie are booked to visit the Ameri-can-bred sire, Worthy Bond. Papatina. who is the dam of that fine trotter Betty Moko, has also produced a promising sq uare-gaiter by The Triumph, while Connie, previously mated with Worthy Bond, produced Trustworthy, the best two-year-old pacer last season and the early favourite for the 1928 Great Northern Derby. Having proved the value of procuring the best, Mr. Brady is determined to try the Mardella horses for future champions. Beatty May Not Race Again ft is quite possible that the last has been seen of the facing mare Beatty on the race track, and she is booked to pay a visit to Worthy Bond at Mardella stud farm. Beatty is a wellbred mare by Hal Zolock, her dam being a daughter of Rothschild. She did not race with a great deal of luck, and on several occasions last year finished in third berth. S. August sueceeded in winning two events, however, toward the end of the season, and her totalled £ 330.
