COMPENSATION CLAIMS
LAND TAKEN BY COUNCIL SECTIONS AT CHELTENHAM “Compensation week” began in the Supreme Court yesterday when hearing was commenced of a number of claims against the Devonport Borough Council by owners of sections fronting Cheltenham beach in respect of portions of their land taken by the council last year under the Public Works Act. The claimants, with the amounts sought, were as follow:—Abraham Harry Rassie,£72o, Victor Donald Joy, £675; Esther Wintour, £730; Olive Constance Johnston, £6OO. Mr. V. R. Meredith appeared for the claimants, and Mr. E. J. Prendergast for the respondents. Richard Willoughby Duder and the executors of the estate of the late R. H. Duder (Mr. G. P. Finlay) sought compensation amounting to £2,001. The assessor appointed by the claimants in the case is Mr. C. F. Bennett. Associated with Mr. Justice Blair on the Bench were the Hon. E. W. Alison, M.L.C., and Mr. T. Lamont, assessors appointed by claimants and respondents respectively. During the morning the Court adjourned to inspect the properties. After evidence of values had been given all cases were adjourned.
