NEW REGENT

“A NIGHT OF MYSTERY” Adolphe Menjou’s latest picture, "A Night of Mystery,” is now being shown at the New Regent Theatre, and has been acclaimed as the most dramatic picture ever made by this popular actor. The production is Ernest Vajda’s adaptation of Victorien Sardou’s stage play, “Captain Ferreol,” and presents Menjou as the handsome and dashing captain of the French-African Chasseurs, who becomes involved in the killing as a result of a love tryst with a married woman. Ferreol’s lips are sealed as to the name of the actual murderer, for the latter threatened to tell of his heart affairs if he hurls any accusations. The story reaches a tremendous climax when the brother of the girl Ferreol loves is tried for the murder another committed, and Ferreol is made to choose whether he will ruin the reputation of the married woman, the wife of a good friend, or break the heart of the girl he really loves. Evelyn Brent plays Gilberte Boismartel, wife of the judge who tries the case, the woman who tries to revive a spark of the old love in Ferreol. Nora Lane plays Therese, Ferreol’s betrothed, and William Collier, 3un., is her brother. A comedy of whirlwind situations, entitled “Fools for Luck,” is the second attraction. This stars W. C. Fields and Chester Conklin in one of their inimitable comedies. The story is of a dishonest company promoter who meets his match in a small-town shopkeeper. Excellent entertainment is provided by the “Eleven Rascals,” a troupe of juvenile performers of amazing dexterity in tumbling and trapeze work. The music supplied by the Regent Operatic Orchestra, under the baton of Mr. Maurice Guttridge, is of the usual j high standard. John Gilbert is not satisfied with being a film actor only, but is holding out for the privilege of directing “Downstairs,” an original story by himself. Erich von Stroheim has promised to plaj’ the role of chauffeur in the film.
