STORIES OF MASSACRES (United P.A.—By Telegraph Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) Reed. 11.20 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. Sir Herbert Murray, Lieutenant Governor of Papua, who has just arrived in Sydney, deprecates the alarmist reports of massacres and tribal risings in New Guinea. He declares that *the residents regard these reports as a joke. Nevertheless they do the country a lot of damage. One affray cost nine lives, whereas the report stated that 500 were dead. This was a pure fabricar tion.
