“MONUMENTS TO COOK”
AUSTRALIA AND N.Z. CELEBRATIONS CONTINUED DUNEDIN SAILS FOR HOME (Untied P.A. — By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Fress Association.) HONOLULU, Saturday. ‘•lf you wish to see a monument to Captain Cook, behold Australia, New Zealand, and the South Sea Isles.” Sir Joseph Carruthers. ex-Premh r of New South Wales paid this tribute to Captain Cook's great work, in the course of a speech yesterda>. when the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands by Captain Cook were continued. Public historical addresses were given at the Army and Navy Y.M.C.A. Honolulu. Those present included the Governor of Hawaii, Mr. W. It. Farrington, who spoke of the importance of Hawaii as a centre of friendly relations in the Pacific. The Consul-General for Britain. Mr. G. H. Phipps, read Sir Henry Newbolt’s paper on Cook’s life and services, Mr. D. F. Davis, American Secretary of War, spoke of Hawaiia’s contact with the world through Cook's discovery, and Dr. P. H. Buck dealt with Hawaii’s relation to a greater Polynesia. The ceremonies were transferred today to Kealakekua Bay. where parties from the cruisers Cornwall. Duuedin and Brisbane, and the United States battleship Pennsylvania landed and participated with Hawaiians in an international tribute to Cook. The sesqui-centenarv officials placed wreaths from all the countries Represented on the Cook monument erected in 1874, and also wreaths from the British war veterans, and the delegates to the women’s pan-Paeific Conference. as the ships’ guns fired their salutes. A native feast then took place, a total <sf 4,000 being present. The cruisers will return to Honolulu to-morrow. The Brisbane and Dunedin will sail for Australia and New Zealand, respectively, and the Cornwall will sail for Shanghai.
