PRIZES FOR ATHLETICS
£IO.OOO TO STIMULATE ENTHUSIASM HERBERT SMITH TRUST FUND (From Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, Sunday. Under the Herbert Smith Trust Fund, trophies for athletic competition are being distributed on a large scale by the trustees, Messrs. C. B. Smith and R. English, of Hamilton. The trustees say that the late Mr. Herbert Smith, of Hamilton, bequeathed £IO,OOO to be spent over a period of seven years In prizes for athletic competitions among the children of New Zealand between the ages of nine and 15 years, the testator’s object being to “stimulate the enthusiasm by the giving of additional prizes and so help toward developing the youth of New Zealand into hardy and characterful men and women.” The trustees say they are prepared to consider applications from headmasters of schools and officials of sports clubs and institutions, for trophies or funds to provide trophies as prizes for athletic competition among the childTho following suggestions are offered as indicating some of the competitions in respect of which it is expected applications will be received:—Harriers, route marching, skipping, swimming and life-saving, amateur athletics, primary and secondary school sports, sports in connection with the Y.M.C.A., Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, and similar institutions, hockey, tennis, basketball, football and cricket. Mr. C. B. Smith said that a large number of applications had already been received and a considerable number of allocations had already been made. Primary and secondary school headmasters and a number of convent teachers were among those who had made applications for trophies. Challenge cups up to the value of £8 8s and other trophies valued at £2 2s and upwards had -been allotted.
