PARRACOMBE REPORTS —According to a radio message received by Russell and Somers, the Miller’s Hardwood Company’s chartered steamer Parracombe is expected to arrive in the stream at Auckland at 2 o’clock to-morrow morninrr from Bunbury, via Newcastle. She will later berth at the Central Wharf to unload the local portion of her timber before proceeding to Wellington and Dunedin to complete. PORT BOWEN LOADING. —To continue her loading under the agency of Heather, Roberton and Company, the C. and D. Line's stear* • Port Bowen arrived at Auckland yesterday from New Plymouth and berthed at the Prince’s Wharf, She sails again to-morrow afternoon for Gisborne, thence Napier, Wanganui and Wellington, to complete, and is scheduled to clear the last-men-tioned port finally on September 3 for London, Avonmouth, Glasgow and Liverpool, via Panama. 1
KANNA SAILING. —At 3 o’clock this afternoon the Union Company's collier Kanna leaves Auckland for Noumea, thence Walpole Island, where she will load guano for New Plymouth, Timaru and Dunedin.
MANUKA TO RESUME.—The local office of the Union Company advises that the passenger steamer Manuka, which has been undergoing overhaul at Port Chalmers, leaves there on Thursday, Lyttelton on Friday, and Wellington on Saturday for Melbourne. KARETU LEAVES NEWCASTLE.Cabled news has been received by the Union Company that the Karetu left Newcastle at 8 p.m. on Thursday for Sydney. The vessel was to leave Sydney on Saturday for Melbourne to complete loading for Bluff, Dunedin, Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton and Wellington.
ULIMAROA FROM SYDNEY.—The only passenger steamer to arrive at New Zealand ports this week from Sydney is the Huddart-Parker and Company’s Ulimaroa. which is due at Wellington to-morrow morning. She leaves ■Wellington again at 11 a.m. next Friday on her return trip to Sydney.
NORTHUMBERLAND AT LYTTELTON. —The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Fedei*al steamer Northumberland arrived at Lyttelton yesterday from Napier and later proceeds to Wanganui, thence Wellington to complete her loading. She is to clear Wellington finally on August 2S for London, via Panama.
CUMBERLAND LEAVES PANAMA.— Cabled news has been received by the New Zealand Shipping Company that the Federal steamer Cumberland arrived at Panama on Tuesday from Wellington, and sailed on Wednesday for London, Antwerp and West Coast ports of Great Britain. The vessel left Wellington on July 24.
WAIPAHI DUE TO-DAY. —The local office of the Union Company has been advised that the Island fruit steamber Waipahi is expected to arrive at Auckland at 3 o’clock this afternoon from Wellington. She will berth at the Prince’s Wharf, and at noon on Wednesday she leaves here for Rarotonga, Mauke, Aitu, and Aitutaki, to load for Auckland.
MAHANA TO LOAD.—Now at Lyttelton completing her discharge of London cargo, the Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Mahana later commences her loading there and fills up at Timaru, thence Wellington, Napier, Waikokopu and Auckland. She is due here on September 5 and is scheduled to sail finally from this port on September 3 for London, via Montevideo and Teneriffe. A. S. Paterson and Company will act as the local agents.
NEW LINER VICEROY OF INDIA.— It is expected that the new P. and O. liner Viceroy of India, now being built by Messrs. Alexander Stephen and Sons, Linthouse, Glasgow, will be ready for launching in September. She will leave London on her maiden voyage to Bombay on March 28, 1929. Ventilation on the punkah-louvre system will be installed throughout the vessel, ensuring in the tropics the coolest conditions in the cabins and public rooms. The vessel’s propelling power is to be on the turboelectric system. The Viceroy of India will accommodate 425 first-class and 25S second-class passengers. The outstanding feature is that all the first saloon passengers will be berthed in single berth cabins, provision being made for family arrangements by a system of inter-com-munication which will admit of neighbouring cabins being linked up into groups.

CANOPUS FOR AUCKLAND.—The Westport Coal Company’s steamer Canopus left Westport for Auckland at mid- j day on Saturday. She is due to-morrow ; morning. CUMBERLAND CLEARED COLON.— j The Federal Line steamer Cumberland cleared Colon last Thursday in continuation of her voyage from New Zealand to Liverpool. She was despatched from ' Wellington on July 24. NIAGARA AT SYDNEY.—The Roy. Mail liner Niagara reached Sydney iron Auckland at five o’clock on Saturd i\ morning. She is to leave Sydney m : t Thursday, and Auckland on the following Tuesday, for Suva, Honolulu. and Vancouver. WAIPORI MARU SAILED.—After replenishing her bunkers with 150 tons of coal from a hulk in the stream, the Japanese steamer Waipori Maru, which put back to Auckland on Friday afternoon, resumed her voyage to Newcastle and Manila on Saturday evening. lONIC LEAVES SOUTHAMPTON. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion liner lonic sailed from Southampton for New Zealand on Friday with passengers, mails and cargo. The cargo is for discharge at Wellington and Auckland. The vessel is due at Wellington on September 24, and at Auckland a w r eek later. BENTON REPORTS. —Henderson and Macfarlane have been advised by radio that the steamer Benton is expected to arrive in the stream at Auckland tomorrow evening from Nauru Island. The vessel will berth on Wednesday morning at the King’s Wharf to discharge a full cargo of phosphates here. PORT HUON DELAYED.—Advice was received by the Farmers’ Co-op. Auctioneering Company this afternoon that the C. and 3D. Line’s motor-ship Port Huon has been delayed at Waikokopu by heavy -weather. From Waikokopu the vessel proceeds to Gisborne, thence Auckland to fill up. She is now* due here next Sunday and is expected to sail finally from this port on Wednesday, August 29, for New York, Boston and London, via Panama. ATHENIC AS OIL REFINERY.—The former White Star liner Athenic, which is being converted into a whale oil refinery by Smith’s Lock Company, Ltd., Middlesbrough, will be renamed Pelagos. A company. Hvalfangerselskapet Pelagos A/S., has been formed under the management of Messrs. Brunn and von de Lippe, Tonsberg, with a capital of 300,000 kroner, to take over the vessel. She will have a tank capacity of 70.000 barrels, and the expedition, consisting of the Pelagos and five new whalers, will leave for the Antarctic, where they will engage in pelagic whaling on about September 1. The first season’s production has been sold in advance to the whale-oil pool on the basis of £3l a ton for No. 0-1. SOUTHERN CROSS ARRIVES.—From a three months’ cruise to the mission stations on the islands of the SouthWest Pacific, the Melanesian Mission steamer Southern Cross arrived in The stream at Auckland at seven o’clock last evening. The vessel berthed this morning at Prince’s Wharf, and on Wednesday morning is to be moved to her moorings in the stream. The vessel sailed from Auckland on May 4 and visited all the mission stations in the New Hebrides, Banks Islands. Torres Islands and Santa Cruz Group. Generally fine weather was experienced, and on the return voyage the vessel cleared Noumea on August 11 and called at Norfolk Island last Thursday. The following passengers arrived by the Southern Cross: Bishop J. M. Steward. Rev. G. A. Thomson, Miss I. C. Wench, Mr. M. Menzies. The office of the Church of England Board of Missions advises that the Southern Cross is to be dispatched again on September IS on another visit to the Pacific mission stations. MAUI POMARE IN PORT. —An arrival at Auckland early yesterday morning was the New Zealand Government's new ; motor-ship Maui Pomare, with passengers and a small quantity of cargo from Apia, Samoa, and Niue Island. The vessel sailed from Auckland on August 1 and proceeded to Niue Island, where a quantity of general merchandise was discharged and 600 cases of fruit loaded. Apia was reached on August 9. and after unloading the remainder of the general cargo and loading 4,700 cases of fruit the Maui Pomare sailed next day for Lunedin, Lyttelton, Wellington and Auckland. Two days after the vessel left Apia it was discovered that the fruit, all of which was stowed in No. 2 hold, had become overheated, and except for about 200 cases, was unfit for consumption. In consequence the damaged fruit was jettisoned and afterwards the vessel was diverted to Auckland. The following passengers arrived at Auckland yesterday morning: Professor Macmillan Brown, Pastor L. Nield, Private F. G. Hudson. Spedding, Limited, the local agents for the Maui Pomare, advise that the motorship is to be dispatched again on Wednesday for Norfolk Island. She is at Central Wharf. An arrival at Onehunga this morning was the Anchor steamer Titoki. from Dargaville. The vessel loads to-day and tomorrow and sails at daybreak on Wednesday for Nelson, Picton and West Coast ports. The Toa. which arrived at Onehunga yesterday from Hokianga, sails again at four o’clock this afternoon on a special trip to Waikato Heads. She is due back again at six unlock to-morrow evening, and at 3 p.m. on Wednesday leaves again for Hokianga. The Rarawa is to be dispatched from Onehunga at three o'clock this afternoon for New Plymouth. The Arapawa sails from Onehunga at four o'clock this afternoon for Raglan and Kawhia. She returns on Thursday morning and at 3 p.m. the same day sails for Wangartui.
