420-PAGE REPORT

ELECTRICAL GROWTH IN ONTARIO

This morning the Waitemata Elec-tric-power Board received a lengthy report from the VJ dro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario. “As the Public Works Department is closely watching the policy of the commission, I am preparing a resume of the 420-page report,” Mr. A. Main, secretary, said. Mr. Main advised the board that the capital invested in the commission’s systems totalled £57.230,000, and the annual revenue was £6,800.000. The average cost to a domestic consumer was less than one penny a unit, and commercial and industrial rates were similarly low. Power was not entirely off the Niagara system for a single minute during a year. and 550.000 horse-power is generated there. Assistance to country residents by the Ontario Provincial Government was by a straight-out grant of 50 per cent, of the cost of lines and secondary equipment. and was based on the policy of promoting agriculture. The operations of this commission should be more widely known by people interested in the electrical development of New Zealand,” said Mr. Main.
