STRAND
“MY BEST GIRL” Nothing has been seen in Auckland more delightful in its conception, nor more beautiful in its presentation than “My Best Girl,” Mary Bickford's latest, and without doubt, most beautiful photoplay which is enjoying an extended season at the Strand Theatre. A very charming prologue is being presented with the picture. This is a miniature revue, “Tiny Tots in Movieland,” and is one of the most entertaining and novel ever presented. The clever work presented by these talented kiddies in the prologue to the “Circus” is far surpassed by this novelty. Over thirty of Mile. Valeska’s pupils portray popular film stars, and the stage is a brilliant sight, a mass of picturesque and beautiful players. One of the most outstanding characters is that of Charles Chaplin as Bluebeard, portrayed by little Dorothy Katipa. Without doubt this is one of the cleverest acts a child actor has presented. Other characters portrayed are Gloria Swanson, Jackie Coogan, John Gilbert, Betty Bronson, Renee Adoree, Janet Gaynor, and last but not least. Charlees Farrell. Master Desmond Casey, who takes the part of the lastmentioned character, is the possessor of a very beautiful soprano voice, and sings delightfuly “Beneath Thy Window.” As the grand finale there is “The Wedding of Mary Bickford and Douglas Fairbanks,” which in itself is a scene worthy of mention. Eve Bentley’s popular Strand Symphony Orchestra plays Roger Quilter’s “Children’s Overture,” and provides a special programme of orchestral music. An Our Gang comedy, which, if that is possible, is a little more hilarious than its predecessors, and an interesting Strand Magazine, which contains scenes of the famous Derby race meeting, the spectacular Trooping of the Colours on the King’s Birthday, and the latest Barisian fashions, are included on the programme.
