DEVONPORT’S COMPLAINT

That too many street collections were being taken up was the. comment made by the Bevonport Borough Councli on an application of the Victoria League to have permission to take up one on August 30. The permission was given, but other local bodies are to be approached with a view to making street collections conform to some quota of days in the year; eight occasions were mentioned. The council adopted a new by-law to provide that the council may at any time, on written notice, require the installation of water meters on any premises supplied with water. Consumers may buy meters outright or pay an annual charge of 7s 6d. Aleters are to be fixed or removed only by the council’s officers. Support was given to the Bill now befo-e the House to promote "local” daylight-saving. An application from a house-owner, who has a valuable house on a section of land that is slipping into the harbour basin, to be permitted to buy or lease a part of an adjacent street was held over: previously he was given permission to move the house temporarily to the roadway’ until he could find a section. Boat-owners along Queen’s Parade, who sent a. deputation recently’ to aslc for the provision of dinghy lockers, are to be invited to inspect plans and to help fix rents. The Stanley Bay Croquet Club was advised that the sum of £IOO which it has in hand will need to bo increased if the area of the lawn is increased to 15 lawns. Air. F. J. Ellisdon was appointed to represent the council at the meeting of local bodies to select a representative on the governing body of the Seddon Memorial Technical College. The Takapuna Council is to be invited to appoint two representatives to confer with Devonport’s two to arrive at a settlement of the dispute over the price for the sale of water mains in Takapuna Borough, owned by Devonport.
