POPULAR COMPETITIONS
ENTRIES SHOW INCREASE ‘‘The entries received for the Auckland competitions have been excellent,” stated Mr. F. A’Deane, secretary, after entries closed yesterday. The total is slightly smaller than last year, but this has been duo to a falling-off in the junior elocutionary test pieces, which from the judging and public point of view may be considered as a blessing in disguise, the repetition of the same piece by some 80 competitors becoming trying. The falling-off was due to the children not having had time to prepare the pieces. There are god entries as usual in the “own selection” classes. There have been increased entries in the instrumental, vocal and dancing classes, and the whole will result in better programmes this year. The dancing and ballet dancing classes —the most delightful classes of the season—show big increases.
