DERAILMENT LIKELY AT NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS “This is rather an unfortunate position,” said the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, at a meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council last evening, when a letter was received from the manager of the City Tramways, Mr. A. E. Ford, stating that an inspection of the points and crossings opposite the Newmarket Post Office showed them to be in a condition which at any time was likely to cause derailment and consequent interruption to traffic. The council was asked to expedite its decision as to whether they are to be replaced in their present position or in the suggested one. The Mayor said that authority for the loan had gone forward to the Loans Board and the council would take steps to expedite the work as soon as authority was obtained. Another letter from the tramways manager forwarded a copy of the report regarding suggested improvements to the tramway system in Broadway. A letter was received from the Public Works Department stating that the question of Newmarket’s position in regard to the funds derived under the Motor Spirits Taxation Act had been placed before the Main Highways Board, with the result that the board had indicated that it was not in a position to make any grant to the council as the borough had a population of under 6,000. Neither was the board in a position to declare any street in the borough a main highway. The Streets Committee recommended that the question of Newmarket’s position in relation to the petrol tax be referred to the member of the district, with instructions to bring the subject prominently under the notice of the department. The Legal and Finance Committee reported that it could see no objection to the provisions of the Museu#.i Maintenance Bill, and recommended that the council take steps to facilitate its Passage through Parliament. The Municipal Building and Library ComnAittee reported that the number of subscribers was now 225, an increase of six. The number of books of fiction was 2,373, an increase of 59. The statement submitted by the Legal and Finance Committee showed that in the district fund account from April 1 to August 10, receipts amounted £9,161 7s lOd, and payments *12,822 19s lOd, leaving a debit balance of £3,661 12s. In the streets improvement loan No. 6 receipts for the same period amounted to £351 16s 3d a nd payments to £IBB 11s sd, leaving a credit balance of £163 4s lOd. „ k® relief of unemployment loan No. “ Ilad receipts from April 1 to August h) amounting to £440 14s sd. and Payments to £440 7s Id, leaving a credit balance of 7s 4d.
