AUSTRALIAN DOINGS

DOMINION HORSES CONTINUE TO RACE PROMINENTLY Yesterday’s mail from Australia shows that the ex-Auckland lightweight, W. H. Jones, has been doing a lot of riding round the Sydney meetings. It was noticed that he went to scale at 6.11 in one race. At Moorfield on Monday of last week New Zealand horses were more often out of the limelight than in it. Inflation (Paper Money—Bo Peep) was the only winner, and Lorient 11., a hot favourite, was second, four lengths behind the winner, in a weak sprint field. There were 176 applications (including several from New Zealand) for the position of Registrar of Racehorses and Keeper of the Stud Book under the authority of the Australian Jockey Club. When the last mail left (on Friday) no appointmetn had been decided upon. No less than 160 applications were made for the three stipendiary steward vacancies in West Australia. The successful ones were R. C. Bone, S. E. Grimwood and W. V. Robertson. As anticipated, Royal Tune (who is an early Epsom Handicap fancy) was easily beat Prince Humphrey at Wqrfavourite, but at a good price, when he easily, beat Prince Humphrey at Warwick Farm last Saturday week. Bunkum, Preposterer and Prince Humphrey were equal second favourites at half a point longer odds, nearly as good as that to be obtained about Noteworthy at Riccarton yesterday. First Win at Ponies Co vent Garden, now known as Southern Cross, scored his first win at Ascot last Wednesday. Royal Debate (by King John or King Mark from Pourparler) won the Welter Handicap at the. Gawler meeting. Nadarino was heavily backed at Belmont Park, Perth, last week, and duly landed the stake. Riders in an earlier race weighed in 51b overweight as the result of rain and mud. Eden Hall started at his original weight, 6.7, plus 51b overweight, in the Maitland Cup, but was not placed. The following weights were allotted to Dominion horses at Canterbury Park last Staurday: Flying Handicap, 6 furlongs (in which First Acre and Prince Humphrey dead-heated): Genuine (top) 9.0, First Acre 8.10, Prince Humphrey 8.9, Ti Tree S.S, Lorient 11. 8.6, Jazz Baby 8.4. August Handicap, 1 mile 3 furlongs (which unconfirmed reports state that Eden Hall won): In the Shade (top) 9.7, First Acre 9.0, Eden Hall 8.5. Three-year-old Handicap, 6 furlongs (this race was won by Perception): Mithra 9.8. Perception 8.9, Gay Crest 8.6, Greenfield 8.5. The minimum was 7.7. Campsie Handicap, 1 mile 75 yards: Mithra 8.13, Ring the Bell 8.0, Quondong 8.0. The minimum was 8.0.
