ENGLISH TENNIS TEAM
VISIT TO DOMINION i N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS AT ; AUCKLAND The New Zealand tennis championships are definitely to be held in Auckland this year, the governing body having set its seal on them. An English tennis team is expected here in October and hopes are entertained that the Australian Davis Cup representatives, now in America, may come home this way and perhaps be prevailed upon to play some hard-court matches here. These subjects were discussed at the meeting of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association last night, Mr. E. Hickson presiding. The following dates for local tournaments are to be sent for approval by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association : —Auckland championships, Friday, January 25 to Tuesday. January 29; Auckland handicaps, December 31 to January 2. The New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association advised that the Management Committee would not decide the make of the ball to be used in the championships until September 10. The championships would be held in Auckland at the usual dates. A cable message from the L.T.A. had stated that lour English players would arrive in New Zealand in October, and a reply had been sent asking the team to delay its visit for a month or come here after the Australian visit, as conditions would not be suitable in October. The president mentioned that there was a chance of the Australians coming through Auckland, and he hoped a match could be arranged for the Clive Road courts. IMPROVING THE GROUND Mr. Hickson said that, last year, an S estimate had been made that the \ grandstand at tSanley Street courts j might be covered in at a cost of £4OO. i A committee might be set up to go into ! thi % question, and also the general , one of improving the ground. The money for roofing would have to come out of the art union fund, which was for the development of the grounds. A committee to consider the questions was set up as follows: Messrs. Hickson, A. Goldie, E. W. Griffiths, D. G. Macfarlane, and H. G. Thomson. “The North Island championships seem nothing but a farce, and we might suggest that they should be discontinued,” said Mr. V. R. Johns. “No.one in the South will come North when they are here, and the Northerners will not go South. They only attract a few players and the titles are not really North Island ones at all.” Without discussion it was decided that the conditions for inter-club competitions for the coming season should oe the same as last. The president said that he believed some of the clubs in the outer suburban competitions wanted to play six men and six women. The clubs might hold a conference on the same lines as last year. Balmoral Club, with two courts, and Bayfield Old Scholars’ Club, with five courts, were granted affiliation. DAYLIGHT SAVING Mr. Thomson outlined the proposal to form an Olympic Club in the city, the intention being to buy a buildipg for £12,000. He suggested the association might give an affiliation fee of £2 2s and accept no liability. On the motion of Mr. A. K. Turner, it was decided to express sympathy with the scheme and to ask for more details. The president emphasised the importance of organising a campaign speedily to help the passing of the local option for Summer Time- Bill, and it was decided to ask all clubs to call meetings and send letters as soon as possible to M.P.’s for the districts. Other committees were elected as follow: Inter-club: Messrs. A. Goldie, F. C. Ellis, D. G. Macfarlane, L. S. Bates, H. Clay. Stanley Street Courts: E. W. Griffiths, A. E. McEwan, A. S. Lamb, V. R. Johns and N. A. Campbell. Ladder: Messrs. A. Goldie, V. R. Johns, A. K. Turner. Schools: F. J. Oh Ison, A. M- Nicholson and R. B. Hardy. Selection: Messrs. E. L. Bartleet, A .C. Johns and H. Clay.
