MI. EDEN’S HIGH RATES
RATEPAYERS COMPLAIN COMMISSIONS DEPLORED A meeting of Mount Eden ratepayers, held last evening, passed a resolution deploring the action of the Government in setting up water and transport commissions at a huge expense to the ratepayers. The meeting also demanded both a Water and Transport Board on the lines of the Electric-Power Board. Mr. Andrews, who presided, said that Mount Eden was now one of the heaviest rated boroughs in the Dominion, and quoted figures to show that where water was not metered rates were higher in Mount Eden than in the city. The selling of wa \ by meter was condemned by Mr. E. dtevenson. What was wanted was a metropolitan water board. The city had a good asset in its water, but the trams were a doubtful asset. He did not favour joining the city, but the proposal that Mount Albert, Mount Eden and part of Roskill should combine into on outer city was quite feasible. It was shameful the way the Government was legislating in ihe city interests with no thought of the welfare of the outer areas. He believed it was time they realised that negotiating with the city on transport matters was hopeless. Several other ratepayers spoke and the executive was instructed to make inquiries on the merits of amalgamation. Mr. Stevenson was elected president, Mr. Crawford vice-president, and Mr. Andrews, secretary and treasurer.
