CRACK RIDERS WILL CLASH IN WINTER CUP
ALL ON FANCIED HORSES Up to this morning riders, had been secured for 18 out of the 20 riders in to-morrow’s Winter Cup, and no doubt there will be little difficulty in getting horsemen for the other two by starting time, if it is intended to run them. It is interesting to find the three best fancied horses—Royal Damon, Haiti, and First Sight—being ridden by the jockeys who finished at the top of the list last season: T. Green, R. Reed, and A. E. Ellis respectively. This fact alone invests the contest with more than the usual interest. The following is the list of riders in the big flat event to-morrow, the WINTER CUP of £750; 1 mile.
Related To Koodoo H. S. Greene returned to Hastings from Gisborne with a two-year-old colt by Hunting Song from Kowerewere, therefore a half-brother to such good performers as Eleus, Koesian, Koodoo, and Company, says the “Tribune.” The newcomer should be the makings of a fine cut of a horse. Greene also brought back the Polydamon gelding Middleman—a rather mean performer so far. Won Last Winter Cup
Solferite won the Winter Cup last August with the minimum, and is engaged in the same event with 111 b more. Prior to his victory he had some racing during the winter, but this season he has not started since last April, owing to unsoundness. However, he was among those engaged at the recent Hunt meeting, in which he ran moderately, but he has done one or two real good gallops since then. Following Precedent
After winning the Brabazon Handicap 12 months ago, Magna Charta was immediately made ante post favourite for the Winter Cup. A similar procedure is evidently being followed this year, as Royal Saxon and First Sight, the dividend payers last Saturday week, are now the ruling favourites for the mile event, but the latter is likely to touch the shorter price of the pair on the day. Other candidates in keen demand during the past couple of days comprise Bisox. Haiti, Panther. Royal Damon and Taboo.
A Hastings Gallop The only gallop on the course proper at Hastings last Thursday was that between Charmaline. Merry Damon and Gay Salute. The. former two finished four lengths in front and registered 51 1-5. Gay Salute undoubtedly has gone off this last two weeks and her track work is in keeping with v.o,' anrtearance.
