PAKURANGA HUNT
MEET AT ARDMORE MANY HARES BUT FEW KILLS The final meet of the Pakuranga Hunt for the present season was held at Ardmore on Saturday, when a large number of huntsmen met the hounds at the Public Hall, in ideal weather. The ladies of the district had a hunt picnic meal awaiting the visitors. Hounds were turned oft in Mr. O’Hara’s property, and soon put up a good strong hare out of the swamp area. After a short run the quarry crossed a creek, which was considered by the majority of the followers to be too wide to negotiate. One of the riders made an attempt to lead the way, and was rewarded a ducking, the remainder decided to travel via the road. On the scent being regained the hare led the field round the farms of Messrs. Bell and Burnside’s, and into Mr. Mullin’s farm, and then on to Mr. O’Hara’s. After travelling over the same course for a second time it eventually found shelter. A visit was then made to Mr. McCullough’s property, and after a short draw, a good hare was raised. It gave the field the run of the day over eight miles. Soon after it made a get-away, it ran into barred country, and with the pack in full cry, the huntsmen had to travel on the road till free country was reached. Most of the run was over new country, much being unimproved. It presented a good variety of obstacles, and when nearing Takanini, puss circled the boundary of a large holding, and led the large field back to the starting point, where it was lost in the swamp. The final run of the day was over
practically the same country, the quarry being run to earth on Mr. Mullin’s farm. There were one or two nasty spills during the day, Mr. O. Self’s mount, while negotiating a double-jump, touched the first fence, and fell over the second, throwing the rider, who was conveyed to his home. Mr. H. Bullock-Webster, master of the hunt, was in charge of the meet, and during the afternoon tea adjournment thanked the ladies of the district for their generous hospitality, and also the farmers for allowing the club to hunt over their properties.
