TUDOR. REMUERA
CHARLIE CHAPLIN IN “THE CIRCUS” William Haines gives one of the best characterisations of his career in “The Smart Set,” a story of polo playing, which is now being shown at the Tudor Theatre, Remuera. How his cockiness first wins the hero a place in the team, then loses his father’s respect, his position, and his hopes of winning the girl he loves, only to win it all back with compound interest at the last crucial moment of one of the most dramatic contests ever filmed, makes a colourful, dashing and romantic story. Polo is only part of the story—but it’s a mighty interesting part. Charlie Chaplin’s latest and most enjoyable picture, “The Circus,” is also being shown. “TWELVE MILES OUT” AT EDENDALE “Twelve Miles Out,” starring John Gilbert, will be shown this evening at the Edendale Theatre. The story is one of modern piracy, and as it develops you leave the sea to visit thirsty New York night clubs, then return to the sea to bring liquor ashore for metropolitan merrymakers. However, the revenue boats appear. Under machine-gun fire there is a dash for the coast. Then a girl steps into the plot—kidnapping—at sea again, cruising warily again for a landing. Twentieth century pirates, step aboard disguised as revenue men, seize the cargo, and the leader demands the girl as a hostage.
