GRIM SYDNEY MAN-HUNT
CHASE AND GUNPLAY POLICE WOUND FUGITIVE (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) SYDNEY, Friday. A dramatic capture was effected today by a Sydney police patrol. Early in May Edward Joseph Coffey disappeared. He was suposed to have been drowned while bathing at Bondi. At that time he was on bail awaiting trial on charges of stealing motorcars. The drowning story was doubted by the police, but they could not trace the man until to-day. The members of the patrol party, in a motor-car, were scouring the Mascot district, near the city, where it was believed Coffey was hiding. . They suddenly caught sight of him and simultaneously he recognised the police and ran away. A long chase followed. Coffey refused to stop when he was called upon to do so. A shot was fired over his head. Coffey drew a revolver and returned the fire. For a few minutes a running fire was maintained, a number of shots being exchanged. At length Coffey was stopped by a bullet in the back, and was quickly overpowered. All the eight chambers of his revolver had been discharged.
