TO BREAK EMPIRE CHAIN
DESIRE OF AFRICANS TALK OF SECESSION (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N Z Press Association) CAPETOWN, Thursday. The Nationalist Congress to-day accepted a modification framed by the Prime Minister, General Hertzog, of the secessionist article in the party’s constitution. In the course of the debate which preceded the decision it was laid down that the ultimate aim was absolute independence. The new article accepts the declaration of the last Imperial Conference of the new status of the Dominions as an attainment of sovereign independence. One delegate evoked enthusiasm by declaring: “There is still a chain binding us to the Empire. I look forward to the day when that chain will be snapped, and we shall be free from the Empire.” The chairman, the Rev. Mr. Hattingh, explained that sovereign independence was not in conflict with republicanism. South Africa could proclaim a republic. No reply was given to a question whether South Africa was strong enough to defend herself if Britain were to declare war.
