KEEPING THE MUSEUM

COMPULSORY PAYMENTS BY LOCAL BODIES SURPRISE SPRUNG IN BILL (THE 8 UE'S Parliamentary WELLINGTON, To-day. The Auckland War Memorial Museum Bill, introduced by Mr. J. S. Dickson, springs a surprise on those suburban local bodies which had declined to contribute towards the maintenance of the new museum. Previously these bodies were merely invited to contribute, but the latest proposal is that they shall be compelled to share with the Auckland City Council, on a population basis, the responsibility for finding £M** every year. The decisive clause in the Bill reads as follows: “Local bodies set forth us the schedule shall contribute annually toward the maintenance and support of the Auckland War Memorial Museum, a sum of £6,000.” The bodies in the schedule are the Auckland City Council, the borough councils of Birkenhead, Devonport, Mount Albert, Mount Eden, Newmarket, Northcote, Onehunga, O tab aha. Pukekohe and Takapuna, the road districts of Mount Roskill, Mount Wellington, One Tree Hill and Panmure, the town districts of EHerslia, Glen Eden, Henderson, Howich, Manure wa. New Lynn, Papaktrra, Papatoetoe and Helensville, the counties of Franklin, including Mercer Town District, Manukau and Wat temata. ,
