THRILL AFTER THRILL

EXCITING FILMS POPULAR NEW SPINE-CHILLING DRAMAS Mystery. Creepy atmosphere. Frightening happenings. A soothing and explanatory conclusion. Film fare of this sort has become remarkably popular witliin the last year, and the vogue is by no means over. New releases of exciting and spine-chilling pictures are announced, and the titles of some indicate that they will out-thrill previous offerings. One of the first big producers who attempted to interest the public in pictures of the “creepy” sort was D. W. Griffith, who closed his famous list of super-productions with “One Exciting Night.” This play was carefully calculated to put one’s nerves on edge from the moment the first scene was flashed on the screen. Evidently, however, picture-goers were only lukewarm in their approval, for the appearance of “One Exciting Night” was a solitary one, and the idea was not copied to any extent. To-day, Griffith’s uncanny film would be a best-seller, and it would not be surprising if it were released once more .

“The Bat,” “The Cat and the Canary,” “The Professor,” “The Thirteenth Hour,” “The Gorilla,” and “The Ghost Train” are only a few of the popular thrillers that have followed the faint wake of “One Exciting Night.” Each has been a pronounced sucess everywhere, and the requirements of the public are not yet satisfied.
