Training Speeds Up

GALLOPS AT ELLERSLIE THIS MORNING’S WORK With the spring meetings fast approaching, trainers at Ellerslie are commencing to speed up their charges, with the result that this week fast work at headquarters has been increasing steadily, although so far nothing in the way of attempts at breaking watches has been attempted. Next week should see still more horses being sent along, so that in another two or three weeks the track work should be once more of more than passing interest. This morning number two grass track was available for sprinting, several gallops being registered.

Lucklaine, with a stable companion, were among the early workers, their task being a spin over five furlongs. From a slow beginning it took them 15 1-5 to run the fi?st furlong, and they finished up their gallop on terms in 1.7 4-5, both taking it easily, the last half-mile being left, behind in a useful 52 3-5. Both show promise. Has Shown Speed

The Australian-bred three-year-old Fernden, by Redfern, attracted some attention by the way he hit out over five furlongs in company with Red Lion and Huephano. He had the inside running, and at the end was clear of Red Lion, with Huephano beaten off. Red Lion went nicely without being pushed. Fernden, who has had only one outing last season (at Te Aroha), looks like being a good one.

Now a five-year-old, Welkne looks in nice order for his preparation. Over six furlongs this morning he strode out very freely, returning 1.25 2-5, the last four being done in 56 4-5. May Win Handicaps Sir Russell again pleased by the manner in which he finished in front of Avoncourt over half a mile in 52 2-5. after jumping off from the fivefurlong post. Both could have done a good deal better, but it showed the former up as being a great galloper and one likely to take high rank this seaGolden Wedding and Sir Mond ran four furlongs in 51 1-5, this being the best from a time point of view of the morning’s work, the last three taking 38 3-5. Both moved well. Brampton, Lineroo and Mountain Guide were partnered in a spin from the half-mile post, and they ran home together in 51 3-5. The first two take the eye, while Mountain Guide has improved since his winter racing. Smart Sprinters Early in his gallop with Sulla, Bulolo had a break of a couple of lengths, but the former was pushed along over the last bit and they finished on terms, the time being 51 2-5, the final three being c I out in 38 2-5. Having her first gallop since being brought in to undergo another preparation, Doublemint did well to stick close to Golden Krist all the way in a four-furlong flutter in 51 3-5. Phaola went once round. being picked up at the six furlongs by Kil-

lute. Phaola ran the last seven furlongs in 1.36, the last six taking 1.20 3-5. „ Master Doon ond Kamchamelia galloped half a mile in 52 4-5 without being hurried. Moderate Schooling The hunter in W. Gall’s charge, known as Yum Yum, went once round over half a dozen of the schooling hurdles, and getting up high and slowly over the first, was fencing in improved style toward the end of the task. Pekatahi gave a lead to Template over a couple of the pony hurdles, and then over two of the schooling hurdles, the latter fencing slowly. A large number of horses were given strong work, but were not out to make time.
