WORKERS AND DRINK

PROHIBITION PROPOSAL DISMISSAL IF EFFICIENCY IMPAIRED (From Our Oxen Correspondent) PUTARURU, Friday. Some consternation was caused at the last meeting of the Matamata County Council when Cr. E. J. Darby moved that any employee who was found taking intoxicating liquor during working hours should be summarily dismissed. When councillors had recovered from the shock several remarked that the proposal was much too drastic. Cr. -Allen inquired whether Cr. Darby intended to include councillors. Cr. Bruce thought there was something in the point raised, but the proposal was too drastic. In his opinion no one should drink in working hours. Eventually the chairman, Cr. Anderson, seconded the motion, which gave permission to summarily dismiss any employee who was found in a condition as a result of intoxicating liquor which prevented him giving 100 per cent, efficiency.
